Negative compressibility , negative Poisson ’ s ratio , and stability
The role of negative compressibility is considered in detail. Experimental observations of negative bulk modulus in prestrained foam are presented and interpreted. A constrained microscopic model which exhibits negative compressibility is proposed. Some other negative and counterintuitive properties of matter, like negative Poisson’s ratio, negative thermal expansion, negative specific heat, an...
متن کاملChiral three-dimensional isotropic lattices with negative Poisson’s ratio
Chiral three-dimensional isotropic cubic lattices with rigid cubical nodules and multiple deformable ribs are developed and analyzed via finite element analysis. The lattices exhibit geometry dependent Poisson’s ratio that can be tuned to negative values. Poisson’s ratio decreases from positive to negative values as the number of cells increases. Isotropy is obtained by adjustment of aspect rat...
متن کاملMechanical metamaterials with negative compressibility transitions.
When tensioned, ordinary materials expand along the direction of the applied force. Here, we explore network concepts to design metamaterials exhibiting negative compressibility transitions, during which a material undergoes contraction when tensioned (or expansion when pressured). Continuous contraction of a material in the same direction of an applied tension, and in response to this tension,...
متن کاملSpectroscopic evidence for negative electronic compressibility in a quasi-three-dimensional spin-orbit correlated metal.
Negative compressibility is a sign of thermodynamic instability of open or non-equilibrium systems. In quantum materials consisting of multiple mutually coupled subsystems, the compressibility of one subsystem can be negative if it is countered by positive compressibility of the others. Manifestations of this effect have so far been limited to low-dimensional dilute electron systems. Here, we p...
متن کاملLow porosity metallic periodic structures with negative Poisson's ratio.
Auxetic behavior in low porosity metallic structures is demonstrated via a simple system of orthogonal elliptical voids. In this minimal 2D system, the Poisson's ratio can be effectively controlled by changing the aspect ratio of the voids. In this way, large negative values of Poisson's ratio can be achieved, indicating an effective strategy for designing auxetic structures with desired porosity.
